The services and components that most people need for IVF are priced together by clinics in a ‘IVF Package’, and the average cost of an IVF package in Manchester is £3,555. However, not every clinic will include all the necessary components required for treatment in their advertised package price. Our research found that when you add in all core services and components needed for treatment (such as blood tests, scans, HFEA-mandated viral screening and freezing of surplus embryos), the estimated true cost of an IVF package in Manchester is £5,830. This means in Manchester you’ll likely pay 64% more than advertised for one cycle of IVF. 

There are also additional costs you will face when going through IVF, for example pre-treatment investigations and medication to plan and account for, which can increase the average total price in Manchester to £7,012. 

Finally most people go through multiple cycles of IVF, on average three, so do bear that in mind when looking at your cost plan. Depending on your fertility path, you might repeat the full cycle of IVF each time, or you might use a Frozen Embryo Transfer – the cost for each of these options differs.

There are several stages to IVF: pre-treatment, treatment and post-treatment. 

In this section, we will look at the cost of IVF in Manchester at each stage if you are self-funding (before getting into alternative ways to pay for IVF further on in the guide). It's worth noting that once you start one stage of treatment you are not committed to pay for or continue with the next stage at the same clinic, or at all; though if you do switch clinics between stages, you may have to repeat and repay for some preliminary tests. Everything starts with your initial consultation and pre-treatment tests (including blood tests to check hormone levels, pelvic scans, semen tests). Most clinics price these together as one package, often called fertility MOTs; though some clinics charge separately for each scan, blood test, consultation... you name it.

IVF treatment packages cover the costs for various components and services needed for treatment, including your doctor's time, nurses, surgical instruments and consulting rooms, though exactly what’s included in a package is different at every clinic.

Anything not included outside of the main treatment package at a clinic is charged as an additional cost. This could include consultations, tests, screenings, scans, embryo freezing and storage. Some people choose (or are advised by their clinic) to have certain treatment add-ons during IVF, which incur extra costs. For example, Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) is used by 49% of people who have IVF, and costs an extra £1,300 on average. Initial tests and previous treatments can determine whether certain add-ons are advised, clinics will recommend these after the pre-treatment stage. The cost of medication varies significantly for each person, which is why most clinics do not include this in their IVF package prices. Your post-treatment costs will depend on your personal situation, but two of the most common are for embryo freezing and long-term storage. The average UK cost of embryo freezing and storage for one year is £750, while in Manchester this is higher, £841. Some clinics include one-year storage in their package, but it’s worth bearing in mind that you might not want to use your embryos for several years so this will of course add up. There are many different ways to pay for IVF in Manchester. Though the majority of people in the UK (73%) pay for IVF themselves, some receive funding from the NHS, while others fund treatment with the help of private health insurance or employee benefit schemes. Some clinics offer financing plans; and given the growing demand for IVF, there are now various IVF-specific lenders that offer personalised finance and insurance plans (subject to eligibility, as is usual with loans and financing options). An interesting option for some might be donating your eggs, either in clinical trials for research purposes or via egg sharing schemes. In these cases, IVF cycles – specifics vary person to person – are offered for free in exchange for a number of eggs, though again you would need to be eligible to participate in one of these schemes.

If you live in England, funding for health services in your area is overseen by an NHS integrated care board (ICB). ICBs determine who is eligible for NHS funded fertility treatment. Greater Manchester is covered by 1 ICB, so if you live in this area this ICB will determine if you are eligible for NHS funded treatment. 

In addition to ICBs, there are NHS organisations called Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs). There are 10 CCGs within the Greater Manchester ICB. CCGs determine the generosity of the NHS fertility offer, so if it is determined by the Manchester ICB that you are eligible for NHS funded treatment, you will need to check with your local CCG to find out exactly what treatment you will be able to access.
