Manchester IVF Cost Spotlight:
- The average advertised cost for an IVF package in Manchester is £3,555, however our analysis shows that the true cost of an IVF package in Manchester is £5,830 - that's 64% higher than advertised for one cycle of IVF.
- The price of an IVF package is not the only thing to consider when budgeting for treatment. Additional costs will likely include pre-treatment investigations, medication, and could also encompass treatment add-ons and post-treatment embryo freezing and storage. Our estimated total cost for one round of IVF for a heterosexual couple, including add-ons, is £8,922.
- Most people go through multiple cycles of IVF, on average three, so do bear that in mind when looking at your cost plan. Depending on your fertility path, you might repeat the full cycle of IVF each time, or you might use a Frozen Embryo Transfer – the cost for each of these options differs.
- The NHS only funds 27% of the total IVF rounds in the UK, meaning most people pay for themselves. Eligibility for NHS treatment is defined by your personal circumstances and postcode, and it’s complicated to navigate. Use our NHS IVF Eligibility Calculator to find out quickly and easily what treatment you’re eligible for on the NHS.
- Finding a clinic that suits your budget, background and clinical needs is essential. Use our Clinic Matcher to find the right fit on all counts, so you can access your best options and have a clear plan from here onwards.
Let us start by saying, there is not a definitive answer to this question. Private costs for IVF in Manchester vary, ranging from £2,750 to £4,851 for an advertised IVF package according to our data. Across the UK this range is even greater, from £2,520 to £12,500 for an advertised IVF package (you can read more about this in our guide to the cost of IVF in the UK).
The reason for the difference in cost is that everyone’s fertility path is different. The costs involved at every stage of treatment are specific to you, from pre-treatment through treatment, plus ongoing and future costs depending on the direction your path takes. In addition, the cost of a package of treatment varies from clinic to clinic, and so does what's included in a package at each clinic - so your clinic choice will significantly impact the amount you pay.
In addition, some people will pay for everything themselves, whilst other people will be covered on the NHS or by their private health insurance. (You can find out if you are eligible for NHS funded Fertility Treatment using our calculator here).
Your personal and clinical needs, access to NHS funding, chosen clinic and how many cycles of IVF you have will all determine the cost of your treatment. It can feel overwhelming, but it doesn't have to be with some preparation. Below, we break everything down further, from NHS eligibility to the private IVF packages to help you understand the potential costs if you’re planning to have IVF in Manchester.

What is the average cost of IVF in Manchester?
The services and components that most people need for IVF are priced together by clinics in a ‘IVF Package’, and the average cost of an IVF package in Manchester is £3,555. However, not every clinic will include all the necessary components required for treatment in their advertised package price. Our research found that when you add in all core services and components needed for treatment (such as blood tests, scans, HFEA-mandated viral screening and freezing of surplus embryos), the estimated true cost of an IVF package in Manchester is £5,830. This means in Manchester you’ll likely pay 64% more than advertised for one cycle of IVF.
There are also additional costs you will face when going through IVF, for example pre-treatment investigations and medication to plan and account for, which can increase the average total price in Manchester to £7,012.
Finally most people go through multiple cycles of IVF, on average three, so do bear that in mind when looking at your cost plan. Depending on your fertility path, you might repeat the full cycle of IVF each time, or you might use a Frozen Embryo Transfer – the cost for each of these options differs.
To uncomplicate the process, we’ve created an industry benchmark, which you can see on each of our clinic pages. Using our Clinic Matcher you can create a personalised clinic shortlist, making it even easier to compare clinics and all of your likely costs at the clinics most suited to you.
What is the cost of IVF in Manchester at each stage of treatment?
There are several stages to IVF: pre-treatment, treatment and post-treatment.
In this section, we will look at the cost of IVF in Manchester at each stage if you are self-funding (before getting into alternative ways to pay for IVF further on in the guide). It's worth noting that once you start one stage of treatment you are not committed to pay for or continue with the next stage at the same clinic, or at all; though if you do switch clinics between stages, you may have to repeat and repay for some preliminary tests. You can find out more about what’s involved in each stage of treatment in our IVF guide.
Pre-treatment costs in Manchester
Everything starts with your initial consultation and pre-treatment tests (including blood tests to check hormone levels, pelvic scans, semen tests). Most clinics price these together as one package, often called fertility MOTs; though some clinics charge separately for each scan, blood test, consultation... you name it.
Here are some typical packages, tests and costs for the pre-treatment stage at IVF clinics in Manchester:

Many clinics will offer these essential pretreatment tests in a single package, called a "Fertility MOT". The costs of these packages depending on your family set up are listed below:

As part of our Clinic Matcher we can run some of these tests for you (or you can upload valid tests you’ve taken previously), so you’ll have a complete set of results ready to share with clinics ahead of your consultations. This allows you to speak to multiple clinics – a key decision factor when choosing the right clinic according to our community – without having to repeat or repay for tests. (We get paid by the test providers we work with, but this won't impact your cost. It's how we keep all of our community resources free for everyone to use.)

IVF treatment costs in Manchester
Most clinics create packages for the treatment phase called “IVF packages”. IVF treatment packages cover the costs for various components and services needed for treatment, including your doctor's time, nurses, surgical instruments and consulting rooms, though exactly what’s included in a package is different at every clinic.
The average advertised cost of an IVF package in Manchester is £3,555.
Anything not included outside of the main treatment package at a clinic is charged as an additional cost. This could include consultations, tests, screenings, scans, embryo freezing and storage. The core components that should be included in a baseline IVF package are set out below. We have also included the unit costs of key components and services, so you can get a good sense of each element, incase some of these are not included in the packages at clinics you are considering:

When we looked at the average IVF packages in Manchester and added everything in that you need from the table above, this gave us an estimated price of £4,764.
IVF treatment add-ons in Manchester
Some people choose (or are advised by their clinic) to have certain treatment add-ons during IVF, which incur extra costs. For example, Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) is used by 49% of people who have IVF, and costs an extra £1,300 on average. Initial tests and previous treatments can determine whether certain add-ons are advised, clinics will recommend these after the pre-treatment stage. It’s important to do your research before deciding on these add-ons, as the HFEA notes:
Treatment Add-ons - Human Fertility & Embryology Authority
"For some treatment add-ons there is not enough evidence to show that they are effective at improving treatment outcomes."
We have listed the average costs for the most common add-ons in an IVF cycle below for Manchester. These all match the UK-wide average:

IVF medication costs in Manchester
The cost of medication varies significantly for each person, which is why most clinics do not include this in their IVF package prices. To simplify your estimated costs on our clinic pages, we’ve used the same estimated medication price for every clinic, £1,500 which is a good benchmark. It’s also worth noting that when you have a fully costed treatment plan and medication list from the doctor at your chosen clinic, you can shop around (clinics will charge you a prescription fee if you go down this route). You can buy fertility medication from high street pharmacies, for example, or even at cost price from Asda!
We’ve listed the average cost and cost ranges for medication and prescriptions at clinics in Manchester below:

Post-treatment costs in Manchester
Your post-treatment costs will depend on your personal situation, but two of the most common are for embryo freezing and long-term storage. The average UK cost of embryo freezing and storage for one year is £750, while in Manchester this is higher, £841. Some clinics include one-year storage in their package, but it’s worth bearing in mind that you might not want to use your embryos for several years so this will of course add up. On average, embryo storages costs £360 per year.
When it comes to Frozen Embryo Transfer (FET), most people will go through several cycles before they get pregnant and have a live birth (you can read more about IVF success rates here). This means adding the cost of FET on top of the IVF package cost for each cycle.
The average cost of a FET (advertised) in Manchester was £1,945.

Alternative ways to fund IVF in Manchester
There are many different ways to pay for IVF in Manchester. Though the majority of people in the UK (73%) pay for IVF themselves, some receive funding from the NHS, while others fund treatment with the help of private health insurance or employee benefit schemes. Some clinics offer financing plans; and given the growing demand for IVF, there are now various IVF-specific lenders that offer personalised finance and insurance plans (subject to eligibility, as is usual with loans and financing options). An interesting option for some might be donating your eggs, either in clinical trials for research purposes or via egg sharing schemes. In these cases, IVF cycles – specifics vary person to person – are offered for free in exchange for a number of eggs, though again you would need to be eligible to participate in one of these schemes.
NHS funded IVF treatment in Manchester
If you live in England, funding for health services in your area is overseen by an NHS integrated care board (ICB). ICBs determine who is eligible for NHS funded fertility treatment. Greater Manchester is covered by 1 ICB, so if you live in this area this ICB will determine if you are eligible for NHS funded treatment.
In addition to ICBs, there are NHS organisations called Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs). There are 10 CCGs within the Greater Manchester ICB. CCGs determine the generosity of the NHS fertility offer, so if it is determined by the Manchester ICB that you are eligible for NHS funded treatment, you will need to check with your local CCG to find out exactly what treatment you will be able to access.
If you’re feeling confused, we understand. It is confusing.
Please use our NHS IVF Eligibility Calculator to find out if you’re eligible for treatment. If you have any questions feel free to contact us at hello@fertilitymapper.com.
Private health insurance funded IVF
The main UK health insurance companies including BUPA, Aviva and AXA PPP recognise fertility clinics and cover all or some IVF treatment costs in their policies (you will need to check your own policy for specifics as these do vary). In some cases, employers also supplement their health insurance schemes with additional benefits, which can include fertility support via providers like Fertifa and Apryl, for example. These range in comprehensiveness: some cover the costs (at least partially) of treatment, while others only offer fertility testing and support.
Again, it’s worth bearing in mind that the likelihood is that you will still have to pay out of pocket for some of your IVF costs, in addition to what is covered by your private health insurance.
How does the cost of IVF in Manchester compare to the rest of the UK?
Location is an important factor when planning for fertility treatment for a number of reasons. There are benefits to choosing a clinic that’s closer to home, as you’ll have to travel there for regular scans, tests and appointments. However, clinics further afield might offer treatment that better suits your needs – for example, people often travel to London for specialist treatments as there’s a wider choice of clinics there.
We encourage you to take into account the details on cost, experience and outcome at each clinic first – and look at location as a secondary factor. Many of our community who are now in their second or third cycle have shared that though their initial choice of clinic was primarily based on location, they have since ventured further afield and found ongoing treatment that is a better fit. You can find the clinics that are the best fit for you around the UK, here.
